December 16 – 22, 2013

Marking is punching me in the face, but I HAVE COMICS, DAMN IT.  Have another week of Evil Marie and Nico.  I promise Marie will return eventually.  This explanation, incomplete is it is, is just taking a while to get through.

  1. Kari:

This is unrelated to the comic, but related to marking. Today I was helping the international student that I mentor with writing a band paper about a concert she attended. She really, really, really wanted to start with “Jazz is one of the most important types of music of all time,” but I wouldn’t let her. I told her that college professors will take off for that sort of thing, and she should never do it. Since she may one day be a student of yours, I thought you’d be proud. 😉

  2. Earthgirl: As someone who has just marked about eighty essays in two days, I completely approve. I really don’t understand why everybody thinks “X is one of the most important Ys of all time” or “Since the beginning of time, X has existed” or “Throughout history, human beings have been concerned with X” or “There are many different types of X” or “X and Y are both the same and different” would possibly be a good way to begin an essay.

  3. Oh dear. Oh, question – she is concerned that the schools she’s applying to will be too difficult to get into. Any recommendations for a Canadian “reach” school? (Those guides you recommended have been priceless, btw.)

  4. Sorry, meant “safety” school.

  5. I had to look up “safety school.” There are a number of Canadian university colleges, many of them now degree granting, that fill that role. I do kind of teach at one (I won’t say the name here, but you can find it easily by Googling me). It really depends on what programmes she’s interested in, though.

  6. Thanks so much, Kari! I had written a response but it seems to have disappeared. She wants to do engineering, and it looks like there are several university colleges where she could do her first year of engineering and then transfer. That would be perfect!

  7. Since the dawn of time, professors have despised students who start their essays with “since the dawn of time”? 😛

  8. Nuttycat: Yes. Yes, they have.

Thursday’s comic is almost done. Alllllllmmmmmost donnnnnnnnne…

I may be a weeny bit behind. Stupid energy-sapping marking.
